Gun show report

Went to the gun show today. There were lots of fudd type guns for sale, very few ar15s, aks, and sks's.

I saw a Russian SKS in good condition priced at $525, and a couple of norincos in good cond at $425. There was one really nice Yugo SKS, it was excellent, almost unissued. It was priced at @275. I doubt it lasted long.

There was one company selling AR15 parts kits that I think were from m&a parts (basically bottom of the barrel AR15s). They only had a few kits that werent NFA SBRs. All were priced at $1000 or more.

I saw a few stripped lower receivers, all of them were $200 and up, with some of them going for $350+.

AK mags seemed to be available for pretty decent prices, but AR15 mags were rare. I did find a guy selling Magpul Pmags for $20 a piece, which I thought was a great price, but most other vendors were selling generic AR15 mags for $25+.

Also, I overheard a few different dealers saying that they were practically out of Glock mags totally. They all said they only had what was on the table.(Generally 10-15 mags either low cap or odd calibers)

I heard a guy selling optics saying the same thing, that he was running out of stuff to sell and didnt know when it was going to let up.

$500+ for an SKS?:36_1_25:

Well I guess it's good that people without semi-auto rifles are stocking up.

My local gun dealer told me that a few companies are making big money destroying LEO confiscated guns.

How?

By sellling the used mags back to the dealers so they can actually ship the brand new guns with 2 magazines.

Welcome to the new economy!

P.S.

Obama (Rahm Emmanuel) is going to be gun salesman of the year for 2K9 also.

I went to the gunshow a couple week ago. There were selling norinco's and sks's for around 300. They were covered all up in that gooey thick oily stuff, so I passed.

Oh yeah, and they had the folded bayonets.

Don't let that "gooey thick oily stuff" scare you off. It's pretty easily removed by using a wooden scraper to remove the big layers, then a GI toothbrush & mineral spirits (naphtha or whatnot) to wipe off the rest. Yes, it's a little work, but the disassembly/reassembly helps you learn more about the "guts" of your new firearm.

Or you can pay a gunsmith 50 bucks and save yourself the headache:biggrin:

I saw more AKs than AR15s, but generally the show seemed to be mostly "fudd" guns and various handguns. I do not really know much about those rifles, so I am not sure if they were selling for good prices or not. The SKS's that I saw were certainly expensive, except for that one Yugo that was selling at $275.

Interestingly enough, I saw someone complaining about the price on it because he said a few years ago they were only $90. I didnt have the heart to tell him that it was a fair price nowadays.

I didnt notice any AKs selling for less than about $600, but honestly I didnt look too thoroughly at them either.

I saw plenty of AK mags also.

Nope...not a headache at all. Just part of the fun of getting a mil-surplus firearm. I'd rather spend the $50 on something useful.

What CAN be a pain, though, is trying to get the soaked-in cosmolene out of a rifle stock. That usually requires heating the stock & soaking up all the oil/grease that comes to the surface.

RE cosmolene:

Put the firearm in a box full of cat litter in your trunk in the summer. Let it ride a week. Flip it to the other side. Another week. No more cosmo.

I think non-used kitty litter.

My car is a hatchback, and doesn't have a separate trunk. Some folks in warm sunny places wrap the stock with paper towels, then put the whole thing in a black trash bag. Leave in the sun for a while...no more cosmo.

Since I might be working on (OK, playing with!) greasy firearms all year 'round, I took a different approach. I used a ~5 foot section of 5-6" diameter aluminum duct, attached to a sheet metal box (something like a forced air heating register). Insert stock into duct, set small electric ceramic heater against "box" end of duct (blowing hot air through it). As the stock warms up, it "sweats" out the cosmolene. Wipe down with paper towels every day or two, and the stock is ready in about a week.

WARNING...if you try to extract too much absorbed oil/grease from an old stock, it may crack. How much is "too much"? Your guess is as good as mine.

When the stock starts feeling 'dry' to the touch, you can apply a coat of linseed oil to help prevent cracking. Just a thought.

My local shop has a WASR AK for $625.

Way to high for my tastes.

Those were 1994 dollars. It's 2008 and toilet paper is more valuable than dollars today.

Not that I'm one to rub things in :sarc:, but I only paid about $85 for my Norinco SKS.

Re: Gun show report

JoeKenFirearms were displaying under folder AK's for $1150!

I MEAN, COME ON! For the same price as basically an AR? They were not selling.

At least not yet.

Other than that, not much else out of the ordinary. I DID see a case of Yugo on stripper clips for $499 a case. Needless to say, it had not sold either.

Bought the last container of Winchester 231 ball powder at the show. THE WHOLE SHOW, no one else had the Win 231 ball other than my one guy I normally buy from. And I wanted 8 lbs and he only had 4 lbs...

OH WELL.

Nice trick JJ.

I have a truck, but it still seems to work OK.

Half the stuff I've bought over the years is still in cosmo, I don't really get in a hurry about cleaning stuff up! Besides, I love the smell of cosmo in the morning.

Yep........and GOLD was what, $300 per ounce ? ......so in 1998, one ounce of gold bought 3 SKS rifles and change.

Today, GOLD is about $900 per ounce and at $275 each that's still 3 rifles and some change.

Just sayin'
